Biography
Leo Varadkar brings over two decades of leadership experience at the highest levels of government to his role as Global Advisor at Penta. As Ireland’s Taoiseach (Prime Minister) from 2017 to 2020 and again from 2022 to 2024, he led the country through significant events including the Brexit negotiations and the COVID-19 pandemic. His tenure was marked by a commitment to evidence-based policymaking and progressive social reforms, such as the legalization of same-sex marriage and the repeal of abortion restrictions.
Before his terms as Taoiseach, Leo held several key ministerial positions, including Minister for Health; Transport, Tourism and Sport; Social Protection; and Enterprise, Trade and Employment. His diverse portfolio provided him with a comprehensive understanding of both domestic and international policy landscapes.
A qualified medical doctor, Leo studied medicine at Trinity College Dublin and practiced as a general practitioner before entering politics. His medical background has informed his analytical approach to policy and governance.
At Penta, Leo contributes his extensive experience in public policy, international relations, and strategic leadership to advise clients navigating complex global challenges. He is also the Hasuer Leader at the Harvard Kennedy School and is a Member of Ireland's Council of State.
